Obongjayar – PARADISE NOW

The second album by the Nigerian artist presents an introspective narrative intertwined with a maximalist, genre-defying experience.

A versatile creator who has been gaining recognition since the launch of his debut album 'Some Nights I Dream of Doors', alongside a series of outstanding EPs and a powerful collaboration with Fred Again.., Obongjayar has swiftly emerged as a prominent name in the diasporic music scene. Now, with ‘PARADISE NOW’, he offers a deep personal reflection and a grand, genre-blurring journey that explores themes of mental challenges and sleepless nights through a captivating narrative oscillating between the real and surreal dream worlds.

Beginning with ‘It’s Time’, a synth-driven anthem that sees Obongjayar embracing the present, the Nigerian-born, London-based artist repeats a mantra that transitions smoothly into ‘Life Ahead’. The latter captures the trepidation of confronting the unknown, showcasing the internal struggle between uncertainty and resolve before culminating in a chorus filled with uplifting affirmations.

Additionally, ‘Peace In Your Heart’ and ‘Holy Mountain’ both convey a sense of bravery in moving forward; the former finds strength within himself, while the latter expresses gratitude for an external influence that offers steadiness. On ‘Talk Olympics’, Obongjayar reunites with long-time collaborator Little Simz. Their synergy manifests in a politically charged exchange over militant snares and fluid synths, providing a glimpse into the evolution of their relationship.

As the album approaches its end, ‘Not In Surrender’ and ‘Instant Animal’ reveal a more defined and focused Obongjayar. The line “Look at me now I’m a killer” resonates in the latter, reflecting OB’s deep-rooted self-confidence. Furthermore, ‘Born In This Body’ is propelled by a lo-fi tune with OB’s signature falsetto soaring, while ‘Just My Luck’ continues along this sonic trajectory, recognizing the influence of chance throughout his life.

Wrapping up on a note of upbeat piano keys, ‘Happy Head’ serves as an appropriate finale to the inner turmoil and the tranquility that follows. Through ‘PARADISE NOW’, Obongjayar has created a compelling, cohesive work that narrates a full story while inviting listeners into the process of his transformation in real time. It’s a soulful expression from an artist who dismisses simplistic ‘Afro-fusion’ tags in favor of instinctively crafted sounds and textures.
