A truly enchanting debut album...

Every now and then, a talent emerges that stops you in your tracks, making it hard to envision ever moving again. Jacob Alon is one such talent – transcendentally beautiful, their folk arrangements oscillate between the celestial and the earthly, the sorrowful and the euphoric, creating a genuine sense of connection. The debut album ‘In Limerence’ is a remarkable accomplishment, a record that genuinely transports the listener from one emotional space to another. It offers a stunning auditory experience, filled with emotional depth, and lingers in your mind long after the final chord fades away.
Located somewhere between the avant-folk of Devendra Banhart, the heartrending orchestral compositions of Sufjan Stevens, and the ethereal musicality of Joanna Newsom, this work is rife with ambition. Collaborating with producer Dan Carey at his studio in South London, Jacob’s visions emerge through themes of trauma, love, desire, and survival – often within a single track.
Utilizing exotic guitar tunings and a voice that ranges from soft whispers to nearly operatic power, ‘In Limerence’ is a remarkable platform for their talents. The opener ‘Glimmer’ is breathtakingly poetic; ‘Don’t Fall Asleep’ is endlessly beautiful, while the aptly named ‘Confession’ reflects a deeply personal confrontation with oneself.

‘Liquid Gold 25’ revisits awkward recollections of unfulfilling London encounters, with a narrative rich in sincerity and a touch of hard-earned self-acceptance; ‘August Moon’ showcases a jazz-like finesse, while ‘Fairy In A Bottle’ – recognized by many due to Jacob’s mesmerizing Later… performance – remains a spine-chilling testament.
The closing track ‘Setraline’ melts into a sonic bath, with the concluding notes crafting a compassionate experience. It’s a moment filled with careful reflection – Jacob Alon invites you into their realm, highlighting various figures and memories (not all of which are pleasant) along the journey. A delightful and truly captivating experience, ‘In Limerence’ is sure to be recognized as one of the standout achievements of 2025.
