In a recent interview, Little Simz appears to discuss the deterioration of her friendship with producer Inflo.
The duo previously collaborated on several projects, including the multi-award-winning album ‘Sometimes I Might Be Introvert,’ produced by Inflo. Earlier this year, it was reported that a legal dispute was brewing between them, as Simz filed a lawsuit against Inflo over his failure to return a $2.2 million loan.
Her new album ‘Lotus’ features a different team, with Little Simz now working alongside producer Miles Clinton James.
During a conversation with Louis Theroux for his podcast, the two touched on various subjects, from creativity and the state of rap to Theroux’s expressed sympathy for Drake’s current situation.
Little Simz described ‘Lotus’ as her “most personal” album so far and refrained from disclosing who the song ‘Thief’ is about.
However, she reflected on the changes in her team without directly naming anyone involved.
Simz shared: “I think this album is my most personal. It was likely the hardest to create on multiple levels. I realized that if I was going to delve into this, it would mean confronting uncomfortable topics that are difficult to address, primarily focusing on grief. [...] It’s about allowing people to understand that process and how I handle it. And as you mentioned, there’s a lot of anger.”
When asked for clarification, the UK artist stated: “It’s about the conclusion of something... I’m moving forward, others are moving on, and things are coming to an end, you know?”
She elaborated on the emotional toll of a team disbanding: “A separation... and there’s so much investment in that friendship or whatever it might be. Whether we were working on music or not, that legacy will always remain and continue. But entering this next phase, this new chapter, brings pain. I’m not made of stone; I feel a lot, and it’s tough to lose people, which is sad. However, I’ll always have my music, and I’m incredibly grateful for that. Even though making this record was challenging, I’ll always have this part of my life.”
Little Simz then praised her new studio team, especially her producer. “Shoutout to Miles because he really helped me overcome a doubt I had. I thought, ‘I might be wasting your time here, mate.’ I’ll be honest; I can’t promise that by the end of this we’ll definitely have a brilliant album. I just don’t feel that way right now, but I’m committed to showing up each day and giving my best. If you’re patient with me, I will do what I can. I just need to be honest about my current state; whatever you believe I possess, I don’t feel that I have it right now.”
Wrapping up this segment of the discussion, Little Simz expressed: “I’ve never really conformed to what anyone expects me to be. I’ve always just been myself, but I do feel a significant amount of pressure to excel.”
Writer, rapper, actor, and groundbreaking UK musical artist Little Simz visited the studio to discuss her inspirations, artistry, her upbringing in London, Busta Rhymes, the Kendrick/Drake feud, and much more. It was an incredible conversation, full of meaningful words and pauses.
The Louis Theroux podcast can be listened to now, and Little Simz is set to release her new album ‘Lotus’ on June 6th.
