LEGO's 'She Built That' campaign debuts with a reimagining of the classic Run DMC.

The LEGO Group has introduced a new campaign called She Built That. Alongside a global team of girls, they have reimagined RUN DMC's iconic hip hop song ‘It’s Like That’ into a lively tribute to girls’ creativity.

In a society where “building” is still often viewed through a gendered perspective, the revamped anthem, originally released in 1983 by RUN DMC, creates a fresh narrative. Named “She Built That,” the revised lyrics and music video aim to motivate girls and society worldwide to see themselves as builders, creators, and innovators. This new interpretation features prominent figures from Gen Z and Gen Alpha, highlighting how girls are already making remarkable impacts on the world around them.

Considered a groundbreaking anthem of its era, ‘It’s Like That’ transformed hip-hop by merging street realities with a hopeful message. The LEGO Group’s updated version pays tribute to the original while paving the way for a future where every girl can confidently declare: ‘She Built That!’

Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels shared, “Run DMC has always stood for breaking barriers and inspiring change. We’re thrilled to see our classic anthem transformed into ‘She Built That,’ celebrating the creativity and innovation of girls everywhere. Just as we pushed the boundaries of hip-hop, we hope to inspire a world where every girl acknowledges her building power.”

The campaign launches at a time when gender stereotypes still significantly shape society's perception of builders. DJ Livia, whose real name is Olivia Borjas, exemplifies how extraordinary creations begin with creativity and belief. Raised in Chicago, she started DJing at the age of five. Her big break occurred when she was just 10, as the Kardashians hired her for a birthday party. Now 17, she has collaborated with Snoop Dogg and Bad Bunny, mingled with stars like Christina Aguilera, and garnered over 1.2 million followers on TikTok.

However, her path has not been without challenges. DJ Livia reflects, “There was a time when my family faced homelessness in Chicago. What kept us going was our determination to not give up. That’s what building means to me—and what ‘She Built That’ represents. It’s about rising up and creating something out of nothing.” Her message? “You are stronger than your circumstances and possess everything needed to shape your future.”

DJ Livia's journey illustrates how passion can lead to success, a sentiment echoed in Nandi Bushell's story. She discovered her drumming talent at five after watching a Beatles video with her family. As a reward for her school efforts, her parents gifted her a drum kit—unbeknownst to them, it would transform her life. By posting drum covers online from her home in Ipswich, England, she gained immense popularity, amassing over 75 million views on YouTube.

Now a global role model, the South African-born British musician, singer, and author stated, “It’s incredible to think I found my passion and purpose before even finishing primary school. I built my dream from nothing but a drum kit, a love for music, and faith that anything is possible. Girls can create anything they envision. The ‘She Built That’ campaign invites girls everywhere to reclaim the term ‘builder’ and redefine its meaning today.”

To promote and honor girls’ creativity, the LEGO Group has rolled out its latest version of Creativity Workshops. This initiative includes a series of dynamic workshops for young creators aged 6-12, taking place at select LEGO Stores and on LEGO.com. Aimed at fostering creative freedom, the workshops explore themes such as Friendship, Botanicals, and Summer Fun, running throughout the year. Alongside in-store sessions, there are also Creativity Workshops at Home, allowing participation from anywhere. The Friendship workshop is currently live, so don’t miss out! Watch the Creativity Workshops at Home and register for the in-store workshops now at www.LEGO.com/CreativityWorkshops.
