The emerging duo Still Blank has released their debut single, ‘What About Jane’.
The duo, consisting of Jordy from Kaua’i, Hawaii, and Ben from Macclesfield, UK, initially came together in a Liverpool basement, exchanging ideas and creating experimental sounds. A few tracks leaked online, quickly creating a stir due to their skillful songwriting combined with a sense of delicacy, with the DIY approach enhancing their evident talent.
Having recently signed with the revamped National Anthem label (home to HAIM and Chvrches) through Capitol Records, ‘What About Jane’ has been polished for its official launch.
The single exhibits rugged alt elements reminiscent of the early '90s, while its subtle folk influences convey a touching sense of warmth.
The DIY aesthetics remain intact, as the single is closely linked to the original demos that sparked excitement online. An ambient hiss accompanies the track, making listeners feel as though they are present with Still Blank during the recording process.
An interesting tidbit: the inspiration for the song reportedly came from a photo of Jane Birkin displayed in the studio.
“She embodied this image of effortless, iconic cool,” Jordy explains. “But it made us ponder—who was she really, beyond that facade? This idea led to a discussion about our own identities versus what others expect of us. That’s how the song originated.”
