David Byrne Reveals New Album Titled ‘Who Is The Sky?’

David Byrne is set to release his new album, ‘Who Is The Sky?’ later this year.

This album comes after his 2018 release, ‘American Utopia’, which garnered exceptional reviews. Following that, Byrne embarked on a highly praised global tour that combined elements of theatre, visual arts, and various parts of his musical repertoire.

‘Who Is The Sky?’ marks his first album in seven years and is scheduled for release on September 5th through Matador Records.

The album was produced by Grammy-winning Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), and the 12 tracks on ‘Who Is The Sky?’ were arranged by the New York-based chamber ensemble, Ghost Train Orchestra.

You can click here to pre-order the album, which includes a limited edition Cantaloupe Orange / Strawberry Pink split vinyl with a lenticular cover.

The new single ‘Everybody Laughs’ is available now, accompanied by a video directed by multimedia artist Gabriel Barcia-Colombo.

In a statement, David Byrne reflects: “Someone mentioned to me, ‘David, you use the word “everybody” a lot.’ I suppose I do this to portray an anthropological perspective of life in New York as we experience it. Everyone lives, dies, laughs, cries, sleeps, and gazes at the ceiling. Everyone wears each other's shoes, which isn't something everyone does, but I certainly have. I aimed to express these seemingly negative experiences in a way that is uplifted by the groove and melody, especially towards the end, when St. Vincent and I harmonize enthusiastically. Music has the ability to hold contradictions together. I recognized this while singing with Robyn earlier this year. Her songs often carry sadness, but the music feels joyful.”

Kid Harpoon (aka Tom Hull) adds, “It took me a moment to realize that these songs are deeply personal, yet seen through David's unique lens on life in general. Strolling around New York while listening to the demo of ‘Everybody Laughs’ was a joyous experience, conveying the notion that we are all alike – we all laugh, cry, and sing. What resonates with many about David is his understanding of the joke. He recognizes the absurdity of it all, and these personal insights reflect his viewpoint.”
