Yazmin Lacey has released her new single ‘Ain’t I Good For You’.
The artist received significant praise for her intricate and multi-dimensional debut album ‘Voice Notes’ in 2023, followed by her collaboration with Ezra Collective on the outstanding track ‘God Gave Me Feet For Dancing’.
She has since returned to the studio, and her latest single ‘Ain’t I Good For You’ reflects her current mindset.
Available now on AMF Records, this lively and vibrant track features Yazmin’s soulful expression enhanced by the production work of Eg White (Adele, Joy Crookes), Jonny Lattimer (Olivia Deane, Janelle Monáe), and Cadenza (Jorja Smith, Koffee).
In her lyrics, Yazmin refers to her involvement with the POC collective drawing group, 2b or Not 2b Collective, while the video was created by the not/nowhere cooperative.
The themes of collective action and community development—especially for Black women and people of color in general—are central to this release. She expresses:
I’m thrilled to be at a point in my music career where I can have fun, be a bit cheeky, and include lines like “I bet your life was dry without me.” It’s playful, sexy, cheeky, and confident.
This journey has allowed me to reflect on how I got to this point; when I began making music in Nottingham, there was no BBC Radio or these magazine outlets. The producers I worked with hadn’t collaborated with numerous artists or accumulated many awards; it was all grassroots, and it feels wonderful to collaborate with people from those backgrounds on this project.
There’s an intense drive when you’re aiming for a specific goal in your artistry—it really fuels you, and I thrive off that energy. Working with the still life drawing class for the artwork and alongside Not Nowhere Collective on the music video has reignited that energy in me. I hope I'm at a creative stage where I can contribute my time and knowledge from my experiences, which brings me joy because it’s challenging, and it’s special to share what I’ve learned. Now that I’ve had time to reflect, it’s the way I want to continue working. We all need to connect and share our skills.
Tune in now.
