During her acceptance speech at the BET Awards last night (June 9th), Doechii strongly criticized Donald Trump’s treatment of protestors in Los Angeles.

The annual event took place in the city, where confrontations between protestors and police were happening only a few miles away from the glamorous ceremony.

Doechii was awarded Best Female Hip Hop Artist and chose to address these issues in her articulate acceptance speech. She stated: “I believe it’s my duty as an artist to take this opportunity to advocate for all marginalized groups — for Black individuals, for Latino individuals, for trans individuals, for those in Gaza. We all deserve to live with hope, not in fear.”

“There are merciless attacks that are fostering fear and disorder in our communities under the guise of law and order,” the rapper declared.

Last week, rumors of an ICE immigration raid in south Los Angeles ignited protests; Donald Trump then controversially authorized the deployment of an extra 2,000 national guard members in response, which many observers felt only intensified the situation.

“Trump is deploying military forces to counter a protest,” Doechii remarked in her speech. “I want you all to reflect on what kind of government it seems to be when every time we exercise our democratic right to protest, the military is sent against us. What kind of government does that represent?”

“People are being forcibly taken away from their families,” she continued. “I feel it’s my responsibility as an artist to raise my voice for all oppressed individuals … We all deserve to live with hope and not in fear. I hope we unite together.”
