Canadian artist JayWood has unveiled plans for his upcoming album titled ‘Leo Negro’.
Now residing in Montreal, the Polaris-nominated musician has recently dropped a series of singles, each highlighting a different aspect of his artistry. He collaborated with Tune-Yards on ‘BIG TINGS’ before taking a solo approach on ‘UNTITLED (swirl)’.
He is now preparing for his next venture. The new album ‘Leo Negro’ is set to come out on September 5th, showcasing JayWood's authentic self to the audience.
He shares his thoughts…
“It’s my most genuine work, but to create the album in this way, I had to write from various versions of myself. I've purposefully segmented my thinking across each track, resulting in a more cohesive project compared to my usual scatterbrain approach of writing about everything I enjoy and hoping it all fits together.”
The title of the album is a nod to his astrological sign and signifies a piece that celebrates honesty. He explains that it “…originated from the central theme of the album, which is identity. I pondered the question, ‘What are the elements that define who I am, regardless of life's changes?’ Interestingly, I found myself delving into astrology around that time because 70% of my friends identify as queer femmes. I was trying to grasp what being a Leo entails. Additionally, I navigate life as a Black man in environments that don’t always comprehend or may attempt to categorize me.”
The new single ‘ASSUMPTIONS’ arises from this context, a genre-blending track that seeks to explore JayWood's own experiences with Imposter Syndrome.
