Music has consistently played a significant role in WizTheMc’s life. Born in Cape Town, raised in Berlin, and later moving to Toronto, these major music hubs have shaped the singer-songwriter-rapper's artistic journey.
In the first half of this year, Wiz released the infectious summer anthem, ‘Show Me Love,’ collaborated with the renowned South African star Tyla on a remix, and took the stage at Coachella, one of the largest festivals globally. Before the latter half of the year begins, CLASH caught up with Wiz to discuss his experiences thus far and what lies ahead.
“Being surrounded by music has always felt natural for me,” he shares via Zoom, attributing his lifelong dedication to music to the diverse environments he has been a part of. He reflects on the cultural vibrancy of Cape Town, where amapiano resonates from taxis and streets, the techno beats filling Berlin’s clubs and bars, and his immersion into Toronto's lively underground rap, R&B, and poetry scenes.
Wiz’s growth as an artist is commendable, driven by a restlessness and eagerness to learn that may underlie his achievements. He started as a rapper, finding beats on YouTube to rap over, then moved on to producing his own beats, experimenting with melodies, and ultimately crafting a sound that distinctly reflects his tastes and instincts.
He explains that his approach to music has always been instinctive, influenced by what captivates him. With his curious nature, it’s no surprise that his genre-blending style emerged, admitting, “It was only after I began collaborating with professional musicians that I started to grasp how sounds could be categorized and defined.”
Regarding his creative process, he notes, “I always allowed myself to draw inspiration from everything, from rock to rap, and mix it in the coolest manner possible. I believe the most remarkable musicians in history have integrated different genres. For me, it’s about the motion of the song rather than the genre itself.”
Currently, his music is dominating social media, radio stations, and the streets, with ‘Show Me Love’ gaining global popularity. The making of this track showcases his adventurous spirit, exploring amapiano, a sound indigenous to his home country of South Africa, which has recently gained international recognition. “While writing ‘Show Me Love,’ I wasn't sure it fit my usual style at the time, and I was hesitant to release it because it seemed out of place in my catalog.”
His path has been anything but straightforward. From his viral success in 2020 with ‘For A Minute,’ to being signed and faced with high expectations, followed by a period of independence, he has come to understand that, despite pressure to create commercially appealing music, the most genuine work arises from his artist self, not the business persona. “I needed to simplify things to the essence of just going to the studio, making songs, figuring out what resonates, and releasing them.”
When discussing the collaboration with Tyla, he reveals she was his ideal feature for the song but was initially hesitant due to her superstar status. However, his belief in connectivity prevailed, stating, “The idea of Tyla being from South Africa, the first major star to emerge from there in recent years and truly making an impact, feels like a beautiful homage to South Africa.”
When asked about his romantic lyrics, he acknowledges they reflect his genuine emotions and vulnerability, stating, “I’m not too cool to express sweet sentiments in my lyrics, like ‘your love makes me feel special,’ because that’s simply how I feel.” The themes of love, relationships, and self-awareness frequently appear in his work because they have always been significant to him. “If I weren’t making music, I’d probably be a psychologist delving into those themes.”
Looking ahead, Wiz expresses, “I believe in natural timing; there are moments to push forward and moments to let things unfold on their own.” For the remainder of 2025, he has new music, an EP in the works, and more performances planned across Europe, so stay tuned as we will definitely be seeing and hearing much more from WizTheMc.
