You may be wondering why Finn Wolfhard is putting out an album, but hey, stranger things have occurred. Actually, it's becoming a common trend among stars from the hit series, as Djo has also successfully ventured into music. Jokes aside, the 22-year-old actor and musician, who is also part of the bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys, showcases his versatility with his debut solo album, ‘Happy Birthday’.
The album opens slowly with the muffled, peculiar title track, inviting listeners into Wolfhard's world through fuzzy indie and alternative country sounds. Although it starts off a bit gradually, the second track, ‘Choose The Latter’, bursts forth with the refreshing feeling of a cold drink on a warm day. Meanwhile, the catchy ‘Objection!’—a summery, Americana-inspired tune—captures the essence of sandy toes and beach barbecues. The overall vibe has a nostalgic quality, featuring hints of Faces’ guitar styles while also incorporating a modern twist; Wolfhard could be likened to a relative of Alex G or MJ Lenderman, but with the spirited energy of the UK band C Turtle. The minimalist track ‘You’ reveals another facet of young Wolfhard, evoking the sweet innocence reminiscent of the Juno soundtrack, enhanced by Annie Leeth’s string arrangement. Unfortunately, ‘Crown’ seems to falter, featuring heavy vocal distortion and repetitive melodies that lend the song a filler-like quality.
According to Wolfhard, the concise album collectively explores themes of his “identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood, and loneliness.” To his credit, this self-exploration is presented with a sense of lightness and simplicity that generally feels youthful and charming. However, it appears Wolfhard still has room to grow in his musical journey.
