In this debut collection by Manchester-based, Egyptian-Sudanese singer-songwriter Nxdia, it's strikingly apparent how they've not only created several viral pop moments (like the chorus of the opening track ‘Feel Anything’ and the catchy bass intro of ‘Boy Clothes’), but have also attracted a growing base of genuine fans beyond mere soundbites. The compilation features tracks that, while not always hitting the target (the closer ‘Tin Man’ comes off as a formulaic attempt at an epic song, unnecessarily ticking the ‘slow one’ box), brings to mind the rebellious punk-pop of Charli xcx’s ‘Sucker’ era within the context of the post-Billie and Olivia world. (The electro-rock track ‘Boo, Nevermind’ might represent how the latter could sound after a weekend at Download.) Additionally, there's a hint of Avril's heartbroken lyricism in ‘She Likes A Boy’, and a delightful nod to Kelly Clarkson’s classic ‘Since U Been Gone’ with the guitar riff that kicks off ‘Nothing At All’. While this may, on the surface, resemble a case of imitation, it's Nxdia’s unique delivery—her ability to convey emotion vocally and present the material with a sense of humor, if there is one—that sets it apart: a record that can be best described as embodying ‘all the feels’ in every possible interpretation of the term. Currently, solo artists producing pop music are the most common in their early stages, yet few seem poised to truly become pop stars. Following ‘I Promise No One’s Watching’, Nxdia might just be one of those rare exceptions.
