Brighton-based quartet The New Eves have released a new song titled ‘Cow Song’.

The band presents a captivating blend, drawing on the ritualistic elements of folk while introducing new avenues, stories, and perspectives.

Their debut album ‘The New Eve Is Rising’ will be released on August 1st through Transgressive, along with a series of in-store performances across the UK in the same month. They will also support Black Country, New Road in September, marking an active period for the Brighton ensemble.

The new song ‘Cow Song’ is available now – celebrated by a four-part vocal harmony, it draws inspiration from the Swedish pastoral kulning tradition, a female-dominated singing method used for calling cattle across mountainous regions.

An elemental and primal performance, the video was fittingly filmed in Sweden, with The New Eves collaborating with Hugo Winder-Lind.

Regarding the video, The New Eves state…

‘Cow Song’ reflects themes of vast mountainous landscapes and the desire to explore them, to simply walk away and roam. It is also a herding song. The rhythm evokes the experience of moving alongside animals, particularly cows. In Sweden (and other nations), there exists an ancient tradition where cattle are walked to a ‘summer farm’ (fäbod) in the mountains. This duty was reserved for women and girls, who would remain with the livestock all summer, forging a deep connection with the animals and the surrounding land. A rich and fascinating musical heritage accompanies this practice. Women would employ a unique vocal method known as ‘kulning’ to communicate with one another and the animals across the mountains. It’s a strikingly beautiful sound and quite loud! This motivated us to explore our voices in a new and expansive manner. Embracing volume felt liberating in numerous ways.

An especially unique aspect of this song is that the opening part was recorded in a field, sung to a cow named Bonnie. You might faintly hear her mooing in the background. She resides at Rockfield in Wales, where most of this album was created.
