Picture Parlour’s Latest Video Celebrates Northern Soul

Picture Parlour has long had a fascination with subcultures, which serve as a way for many young people to discover their identity. Their new single “Who’s There To Love Without You?” elevates this theme – it’s a vibrant indie anthem, celebrating outsiders and the communities we form to navigate life.

For the accompanying video, the band took over South London's Peckham Liberal Club, creating their own gathering space called The Parlour.

Photographer and filmmaker Jeanie Jean was on hand to capture the action, inviting a group of Northern Soul dancers to join in and show off their moves.

Northern Soul, a truly underground community, is experiencing a resurgence, with clubs such as Heart Of Soul, Deptford Northern Soul Club, and events at the Rivoli introducing a new generation to the sounds of rare soul music.

“Including Northern Soul in the video was significant for us because it is part of our identity, and it’s a culture that young people aren’t exposed to much these days,” the band explained to Clash. “It felt like a unique chance to shine a light on a culture we grew up with and to add our own twist. It’s definitely something we would feature at The Parlour.”

“We were raised in families that appreciated Northern Soul and shared stories of those incredible all-nighters at the Wigan Casino. ‘Who’s There To Love Without You?’ isn’t technically a Northern Soul song, but it resonates with the genre as it’s a bold, unapologetic love song that makes you want to dance. We wrote and recorded it in America and then returned home to film the video, creating a beautiful connection to Northern Soul culture, as many DJs traveled from the North of England to the US to discover these incredible records and bring them back to British audiences at Northern Soul clubs.”

“The entire shooting day felt magical. We essentially turned The Parlour into our own Northern Soul club, attracting wonderful dancers and Northern Soul enthusiasts to dance from dawn till dusk. The highlight of the day was capturing the professional dancers as chalk flew off the floor, filling the dance space as the strobe lights burst to life. It looked incredible.”

“The energy on set was electric the whole time, as everyone was simply there to dance and make connections.”

The video’s storyline is akin to “Fight Club for girls.” The band aimed for the energy and visuals to reflect the song's boldness. They also wanted to craft a nighttime version of a venue from the album, named ‘The Parlour,’ which would embody their essence.

The day was filled with joy, with Jeanie capturing the events in their raw form for the music video. “Collaborating with Jeanie was a dream come true,” the band shared. “We’ve wanted to work with her since we moved to London after witnessing her talent at local Northern Soul events. Her work is striking and genuine. Jeanie is an incredible force and an absolute treasure. It’s a privilege to work with someone so dedicated and passionate about the culture. We’re already seeking more opportunities to collaborate again!”

Famous for her documentation of the Northern Soul scene and subcultures in general, Jeanie embraced the role enthusiastically. “This was my first time shooting stills for a music video,” she admits. “I felt slightly nervous but knew I was among exceptional individuals, and it couldn’t have taken place in a more iconic venue than Peckham Liberal Club. Much like the Rivoli, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. Meeting fellow photographer Melissa was surreal; I had been admiring her work for ages.”

“I gradually found my rhythm, treating the shoot as if it were a typical club night. During breaks, I captured candid moments of the dancers chatting, laughing, or posing to showcase their outfits. I wanted them to feel comfortable, as though they were really at a Saturday all-nighter. My two favorite shots from the session are of two girls against a wall making faces as I encouraged them to treat the camera like an old photo booth. The other is a dynamic shot on the dance floor of Conor, one of the dancers, throwing Talc onto the ground. Under the strobe lights, it exploded into a cloud, which felt utterly magical. I haven’t had this much fun in ages!”
