Brooklyn-based British-Nigerian artist Halima is set to release her debut album, ‘SWEET TOOTH’, on September 19th.
Distributed by drink sum wtr, ‘SWEET TOOTH’ is a follow-up to Halima's previous project ‘EXU’, which came out last year. The eleven-track album showcases Halima's sensory capabilities, navigating between the rhythms of Afro-pop club vibes, futuristic RnB mid-tempos, and unconventional ballads.
In collaboration with producers like Mikey Freedom Hart (A$AP Rocky, Dev Hynes/Blood Orange, Empress Of), ‘SWEET TOOTH’ unfolds over one fateful night, delving into themes of desire, transformation, and the intricacies of sweetness.
“Sweetness on my terms,” Halima expresses. “This album is about returning to oneself amid chaos and embracing the painful yet enjoyable aspects of the journey. Am I who I aspired to be? I believe so. I’ve granted myself the freedom to be daring, to be authentic. To occupy space.”
To tease the audience, Halima has released her first single ‘cocoa baby’—a diasporic track inspired by energetic nights in Lagos. Channeling a club siren vibe, the artist presents a visually captivating treat directed by her frequent collaborator, Bellamy Brewster.
Halima elaborates: “Last year, I spent some time in Lagos with my cousins and visited several clubs, and that vibrant energy lingered with me. Growing up in London and now living in Brooklyn, I always infuse the diaspora into everything I create. Collaborating with Corey Smith-West on production and Bellamy Brewster on the video was fantastic since we all shared this understanding and aimed for ‘cocoa body’ to celebrate our blended diasporic cultures.”
