The Belfast band has become a focal point in culture, with their vocal support for the Palestinian cause leading to a backlash from right-wing circles.

During a performance at O2 Forum Kentish Town last year, Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh / Mo Chara reportedly displayed a Hezbollah flag, resulting in terrorism charges against him.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Kneecap’s participation in Glastonbury as "inappropriate," while the festival organizers expressed their support for the band. Emily Eavis commented on Starmer’s statements, saying, “This year has seen many heated issues, but we continue to be a platform for numerous artists from around the world, and everyone is welcome here.”

Drawing one of the largest crowds of the day at the West Holts Stage, Kneecap began their performance with a montage of their critics before diving into ‘Better Way To Live’.

Mo Chara proclaimed to the audience, “Glastonbury, I’m a free man!”

With an energetic show, Kneecap are long-time friends of Glastonbury; they had a late-night gig at Worthy Farm in 2024 that saw attendees including Noel Gallagher and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Performing 'H.O.O.D.' and 'Get Your Brits Out', Kneecap urged the Glastonbury audience to keep their focus on peace for Palestine: “We’ve had a stressful time but it’s nothing compared to what the Palestinian people are going through.”

“They're war criminals, and that’s undeniable,” they asserted.

The band repeatedly chanted “fuck Starmer” before adding: “You might have seen Mo Chara in court this month at Westminster… facing a fabricated terrorism charge. This isn’t the first time an Irish person has faced a miscarriage of justice in the British legal system.”

The set concluded with “FREE PALESTINE” displayed on screens behind the band.
