Olivia Dean is the second feature of CLASH 131.
We celebrate the London artist with her debut CLASH cover, in collaboration with Magnum® Ice Cream.
Two years after her Silver-certified, Mercury Prize-nominated first album ‘Messy’, Olivia Dean returns with her new release, ‘The Art Of Loving’ – a soft blend of soul, jazz, and bossa nova, enhanced by modern pop elements.
Drawing inspiration from Mickalene Thomas’ exhibition All About Love – a tribute to the feminist author bell hooks, who expanded the idea of love and relationships in their many forms – Dean explores a non-linear path through her mid-twenties, grounded in self-love.
Expanding her musical portfolio with a remarkable blues-rock partnership with Sam Fender, appearing in the closing credits of a Bridget Jones film, and overcoming the anxiety of a difficult follow-up with an album that resonates with heart and purpose, Olivia Dean invites her audience to pause and join her in this moment. This is her ideal.
She expresses to CLASH: “I want listeners to indulge in their emotions… I want them to reflect on how we treat one another and how we overlook and nurture ourselves. I confront my emotions, which can be quite powerful. But I honor that intensity because I feel it deeply.”
