A dark alt-pop gem for the summer season...
The aptly named ‘My First Album’ has been a long time in the making – but with a Baker’s Dozen of delightfully dark synth-pop creations, Jessica Winter makes the wait worthwhile.
An effortlessly stylish songwriter, every element feels meticulously crafted. As a striking alt-pop artist, Jessica Winter successfully transforms December's darkness into the bright light of midsummer. ‘Nirvana’ serves as a beautiful introduction, infusing 90s sounds into an immersive, ultra-gothic opening experience. And don’t miss the sitar, either.
A thoughtfully curated yet eclectic experience, ‘My First Album’ oscillates between immediacy and depth. ‘L.O.V.E.’ is an incredibly catchy pop anthem, ‘Worst Person In The World’ captures a mix of euphoric sounds and self-loathing, while ‘I See The Robin’ merges Radiohead’s ‘The Bends’ era with her own unique brand of feminine creativity for 2025.
There’s hardly a dull moment in her work. ‘Wannabe’ may borrow its title from a classic Spice Girls hit, but it presents a highly original goth-pop sound that explores the themes of peer pressure and awkward infatuation.
‘God Something Good’ crackles with intense energy, ‘Only Lonely’ glimmers with cold beauty, and the heavenly piano notes in ‘To Know Her’ create a perfect conclusion. With endless replay value (is that a term? It is now!), ‘My First Album’ is bold, captivating, and addictive. A dark delight for the summer season.
