Known primarily as the lead vocalist of the New Jersey pop-rock band Young Rising Sons, Andy Tongren has reintroduced himself this summer as an indie folk solo artist. Embracing this new role involves a journey of self-discovery to find the purpose behind his creative endeavors. As an optimist, Tongren focuses on the silver lining even in challenging times, encouraging his fans to value their surroundings.

“I truly try to find the silver lining wherever possible,” the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter shares with Atwood Magazine. “At my core, I feel like there’s nothing else I can pursue.”

His initial solo tracks reflect his hopeful spirit with heartfelt messages. May’s debut single, “So Good,” embodies this very philosophy. “Interestingly enough, it kind of emerged from a dark time,” Tongren reveals. “I was living in a cold, dark basement on the edge of Bushwick, just trying to make it through each day… Winter was approaching, and I think I just craved a bit of warmth.”

In his second solo release, Tongren invites listeners to experience “Franconia,” a town nestled in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Amidst the picturesque setting, he uses Franconia as a metaphor for the beauty of life.

“‘Franconia’ is about falling in love—with a person, a place, or both at the same time. It captures that sudden, undeniable connection that feels fated,” Tongren elaborates. “Over time, Franconia transcends being just a location; it evolves into a state of mind, a memory, a metaphor for how specific people and places can influence your life.”

Everyone has their own version of Franconia—a place etched in their memories forever. This could be a physical location, a moment in time, or the role a person holds in one’s heart. Regardless of the specifics, Franconia represents a sense of freedom—a retreat from the world's concerns. Often, reflecting on their Franconia can remind someone of what genuine happiness feels like.

“Like the tracks on some worn-down train

      Ain’t scared of death

But I’m so scared of change

      But it felt heaven-sent

When those clouds came and went

And made way for the sun on your face

Yeah, I’ve fallen in love with this place.”

Discovering and cherishing life’s captivating moments can be bittersweet, evoking a desire to freeze those experiences in time. Although life continually moves forward, memories are everlasting, and the recollection of Franconia will always resonate in Tongren’s mind.
