Atwood Magazine is excited to premiere “The Glow,” the stunning and profoundly beautiful debut single from Brittany, France-based singer/songwriter Aïda Mekonnen Caby. Released on July 16th, the track serves as the lead single from Caby’s debut solo album, Mais Uma, which will be available on August 29th via Mtn Laurel Recording Co.

Though this marks her first release under her own name, Caby is familiar with the music scene: She has previously been part of the bands Forever Honey and Work Wife, the latter of which led her to connect with TOLEDO – the Brooklyn indie duo that produced her album and has recently been highlighted on Atwood for their impressive EP, Inertia. With Mais Uma, Caby emerges as a solo artist for the first time, shifting from band dynamics to a personal, gently cinematic sound that is entirely her own.

As her inaugural solo single, “The Glow” not only showcases Caby’s soul-stirring folk-influenced sound, but also the heartfelt narratives and emotional resonance that are central to her developing artistry.

“This was one of the first songs I wrote for the album, and also the first I recorded,” Caby shares with Atwood Magazine.

“I had a feeling it could be a solo piece, as it signified a turning point in my life. I wrote it about a road trip my partner and I took around Iceland shortly after we met. I aimed to convey the essence of the emotion I experienced when we stopped at a canyon whose name makes up the difficult-to-pronounce refrain of the song: Fjaðrárgljúfur.”

The word – Fjaðrárgljúfur – becomes both a grounding element and a refrain, echoing in the song’s chorus like an unforgettable memory. “I feel the glow, your neon soul / It makes me whole, when I get low,” Caby sings, her voice gentle and intentional. There’s a raw vulnerability present, captivating in its simplicity: she isn’t trying to show off; she’s inviting us into her experience.

In “The Glow,” Caby reflects on a budding relationship with her partner, all while enveloped in the breathtaking beauty of Fjaðrárgljúfur’s natural landscapes.

“We jokingly refer to that road trip as our second date since we’d only spent three weeks together during my vacation in Porto just two months earlier, making this our first reunion,” she explains. “The lyrics express the warmth and safety I felt in this exciting new relationship, alongside the remarkable scenery that shifted my perspective while I had been feeling rather stuck and uninspired at home.”

She adds, “The second verse exaggerates my tendency to feel a bit paranoid and uneasy when things appear ‘too good.’” This is where lines like “Did you find god, then damn your luck? / It must be hard to feel that love” emerge – existential musings woven into a delicate melody, capturing the blend of fear and wonder that accompanies falling hard for someone.
