“A lot of things happened… it wasn’t just her death… my mum… suffered two strokes. My brother experienced psychosis,” Jim Legxacy openly shares against a backdrop of vibrant euphoria, warm guitars, and MIDI synths at the start of ‘black british music (bbm).’

“‘Candy Reign’ was removed,” he adds, referencing his 2022 single that faced a copyright issue. This earlier mention reflects the deep sincerity he will channel into the 15-track album, while the latter highlights his long-standing commitment.

More raw emotion is on the way, showcased in tracks that address trust issues, where Jim’s voice gently fades atop an acoustic guitar as he reflects on being genuinely vulnerable. The understatedly blossoming ‘dexters phone call’ features Dexterinthenewsagent, pairing a steady guitar with a somber hook – “Life’s not been easy” – elevated by lively vocal samples and music classroom chords morphing into distorted riffs.

Yet, Jim seamlessly injects genuine feelings into the more upbeat songs, like the intense single ‘3x’. He makes another reference to his late sister – a thread of sorrow that weaves through ‘bbm’ – while the impactful guest appearance by Dave reassures Jim that he makes her proud. This heartfelt delivery occurs over infectious dancehall-inspired beats. Grief and joy intertwine, reminiscent of that first nostalgic sip at a gathering marking the start of an extended period of sadness.

The artist articulates his knack for blending these contrasting emotions in the energetic phone-speaker track ‘father’: “I was on the block listening to Mitski.”

Visualize young Jim in Lewisham, headphones blasting a wide array of music; the ‘father’ video showcases UK-centric Frutiger Aero aesthetics, the prevalence of Blackberry phones, and grainy 280p visuals; even the album's title nods to the messaging platform. All of this illustrates Jim as someone who developed a passion for music in the late 2000s.

The waning days of playlists hastily assembled from BeeMP3 downloads and Bluetooth tunes. When you’d pair your YouTube-ripped dj_boonie_whenitwasme.mp3 with the bouncy bass of T2’s ‘Heartbroken’. When sugary emo coexisted with harsh grime beats in the same folder. When Limewire gave eager music lovers access to any songs imaginable.

‘’06 wayne rooney’ reminisces about its namesake year, offering a dose of emo-indie with a yearning drive – one can almost visualize the FIFA 06 team selection screen. The quick-cut collage ‘new david bowie,’ with its LG Chocolate-pitched vocals, abruptly shifts into dubby ad libs as Jim delivers trappy lines in between breaths, momentarily steering clear of technology distractions: “Put my phone on DND.”

Amidst a week where the UK vs US debate hit a boiling point – a discussion both stimulating and exhausting – Jim Legxacy is on the bus scrolling through his Blackberry, weaving together a sonic tapestry of varied influences over a core of Black London musicality, infusing each strand with an unmistakable protagonist energy.
