Gus Dapperton has released his first new material since the 2024 EP ‘Tunes for Late Spring’. Today, the New York indie pop artist unveiled ‘Down Like This’, marking a shift in his musical era and hinting at a possible upcoming full-length album.
Dapperton has always been open about his love and appreciation for dance music. This influence has consistently appeared in his work: energetic drum machines, bubbly synths, and tight basslines are a staple. In 2019, he also released ‘In Passing 001’, a purely dance-oriented project.
When Clash interviewed him in 2023 about his third album, ‘Henge’, he mentioned:
“My aim is for my music to transcend genres, merging all my influences into a cohesive sound. I initially overlooked dance music when I began making music, but I quickly grew fond of it. I started going to clubs and DJing, and I had many friends who produced house music too.”
‘Henge’ saw Dapperton exploring the space between his indie pop origins and his affection for dance music, and with this new phase, he fully embraces the club atmosphere.
With ‘Down Like This’, Dapperton effectively channels his passion for dance music. The track is minimalist, straightforward, driven by a strong beat and bassline. He appears to draw inspiration from New York house, reminiscent of artists like Metro or Kings Of Tomorrow, adopting a ‘less is more’ philosophy to create a polished dancefloor track. His distinctive vocal style has been altered in pitch, yet his unique timbre remains evident. The hooks are smooth, and the more melodic segments carry a subtle French flair with rich harmonic layers.
Gus Dapperton has yet to provide additional information about the context of ‘Down Like This’, but it’s clear that a new chapter is on the way.
