Creating a Legacy in BMX and More: A Dialogue with Ryan Taylor, Bob Haro, and the IKONIX Team

From freestyle achievements and viral YouTube moments to building sessions in Dubai and aspirations for the Olympics — this roundtable explores the grit, essence, and future of BMX culture. Featuring influential figures from various generations — BMX icon Bob Haro, creative visionary Ryan Taylor, and the team revitalizing IKONIX — this conversation serves as a foundation for legacy. Building Legacy in BMX and Beyond:

Few names in the BMX world hold as much legend as Bob Haro. As a key figure in the development of freestyle BMX and the founder of the renowned Haro Bikes, Bob has been central to two-wheel culture for many years. Currently, with his new venture IKONIX, he is looking ahead while paying tribute to the past. We spoke with Bob, BMX innovator Ryan Taylor, and the IKONIX team for an insightful discussion on legacy, progress, and the future of BMX.

Bob Haro, a true BMX pioneer, is recognized for his foundational role in freestyle and as the creator of Haro Bikes. His newest venture, IKONIX, aims to merge his established legacy with a contemporary vision. BMX innovator and Collective founder Ryan Taylor joins him to discuss the culture, hard work, and the future of BMX.

Reflecting on his upbringing in San Diego during the ‘70s, Bob shares how motocross and skateboarding naturally led to the emergence of BMX. “There was a skatepark right nearby. We rode our skateboards in the day, and at night we would throw our bikes over the fence since they didn’t allow bike riders. I always preferred showing off to racing, which evolved into freestyle. That was the moment it all came together for me.” He recalls the extraordinary occasion of BMX being included in the Olympics in 2008, when Nike approached him to design the team uniforms. "I was at a massive Nike media event in Beijing with countless international outlets. Speaking on stage about BMX? That was a defining moment for me.”

Ryan shares his own experiences in BMX, crediting the influence of Dave Mirra. “To be honest, it was always Dave. Early on, Dave Mirra inspired me. I briefly tried pursuing a boxing career, which didn’t pan out, but I later realized how ahead of the game he was in that realm. Remember when he fought Brian Deegan? Many overlook that. He was crossing over before influencer boxing was a thing.” He adds, “Dave exemplified what was achievable—through the Animal House and the skatepark. There was a period, during what we dubbed the Australian Invasion, where I was entrusted with the keys to the warehouse. Dave and the squad were selective, but somehow I was given access. That held a lot of significance for me.”

As they discuss legacy and content, Ryan continues, “I spent considerable time with Harry Main, who taught me the significance of online videos and the concept of legacy—creating content that outlives you. Moving into the YouTube landscape, I learned from influencers like Logan and Jake Paul. You can still find those moments—I rode my bike to their place, did a backflip over a school bus, triple whip... To outsiders, that's impressive. But to us? That was just another Tuesday at the Animal House.”

Bob elaborates on the inception of IKONIX, stating, “I first envisioned IKONIX back in 2010. I started crafting bike designs, gear, number plates—all from the ground up. People often referred to me as ‘an icon in the sport,’ which is how the name was conceived.” He reveals, “Though I launched it in 2010, I had to pause due to personal issues and some tough lessons about sharing my ideas too early online. I wasn't well-versed in social media, and I prematurely shared everything, leading to others replicating my concepts. It was a hard lesson for me.” However, with a rejuvenated team including longtime friend Andy Leisner and former Haro executive John Buultjens, IKONIX is poised for its official launch.

“Our inaugural model, the FS1, integrates design elements tied to my history,” Bob notes. “Yet, it represents a modern bike. The geometry, feel—everything is tailored for today’s riders.” Ryan chimes in, “As a founder or creative leader of a brand, the responsibilities can be overwhelming—managing social media, finances, logistics. It’s easy to lose track of your strengths.” Bob concurs, “At some point, you have to step back, trust others, and enable them to facilitate growth.” Ryan summarizes, “Ego has no place here. This is all about unity. IKONIX is dedicated to uplifting BMX.”

Looking ahead, Bob mentions plans for a significant event this summer. “We’re coordinating a collaboration with Max Cooper and the Gumball 3000 crew, set for July 31st. It will spotlight UK BMX culture—with a unique twist. I’ve
