Seattle-born artist UMI is set to release her upcoming album ‘people stories’ on August 22nd.
This marks her debut with Epic Records, and the album delves into the richness of the human experience, highlighting the unexpected connections found in our life narratives: touching, unfiltered, and grounded in emotional honesty. UMI blends elements of soul, R&B, folk, and pop, addressing themes of ego, healing, identity, and connection.
Most of the album was recorded in her home studio, where ambient sounds—such as the air conditioner and creaking doors—made their way into the final tracks. The inclusion of her therapist’s outros during the writing adds depth, as the songs interweave different narratives, and the album’s live-recorded performances celebrate the beauty of life’s chaos.
“I aimed to be the storyteller, the medium through which everyone’s stories are expressed,” UMI explains regarding her new album. “We all lead quite similar lives, sharing the same colors but with different shades. I find comfort in that. While creating this album, I discovered pieces of myself in every story I told. It reminded me of the vividness of human experience. For me, coming to terms with even the darkest aspects of life has been profoundly healing and made possible by connecting with others.”
Alongside the album announcement, UMI unveils two new tracks, ‘SOMEWHERE NEW’ and ‘WHAT NOW’, following her earlier releases ‘HARD TRUTHS’ featuring 6LACK and ‘10AM’, which were introduced earlier this year.
Raised in a musical environment, UMI kickstarted her career by posting acoustic covers and original compositions on SoundCloud while in high school. Choosing to pursue music full time, she left USC to further develop her art, launching a series of character-building EPs: ‘Interlude’ (2018), ‘Balance’ (2019), and ‘Love Language’ (2019).
