Lathe Of Heaven Releases New Track ‘Oblivion’

Lathe Of Heaven has unveiled their latest single, "Oblivion."

The New York-based band is set to release a new album that merges abrasive punk with 80s post-punk influences, along with elements of analogue synths. Additionally, the upcoming album titled "Aurora" draws inspiration from science fiction, with each track crafted as an individual short story that contributes to a larger narrative.

"Oblivion" exemplifies this concept. Hidden beneath its chilly soundscapes are lyrically incantatory themes that delve into a futuristic drug and its consequences on addiction.

Furthermore, "Oblivion" goes beyond that by addressing the methods of control used to form a submissive society.

      Band member Gage Allison explains...

"When you repeat a word enough, it starts to lose its significance. This phenomenon is known as semantic satiation, and it's a key influence for this song. One day, I aspire to write a short story about a drug that, when consumed in front of a mirror, activates a feedback loop that erases the user's sense of self."

He continues, "Descartes proposed that the mind and body are fundamentally distinct. This leads to our perception of the world as a subject among objects. While I don't think this notion is incorrect, I'm intrigued by the idea of being deceived into feeling a profound connection with the universe, creating an intricate bond of existence. I don’t intend for this story to have a happy resolution.

Though framing the idea this way may come across as 'esoteric hippie,' that’s not my intention... Ultimately, excess of anything is usually detrimental, and using this drug could result in severe repercussions. Additionally, establishing this thought experiment creates a paradox where the dissolution of the mind-body divide generates another division of experience, thus recreating the very state the user sought to escape. Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself... Let’s just say the lyrics serve as a precursor to this future endeavor."

A complete music video for "Oblivion" is now available, created by Max Rooney and Hank Allen of Fingertrap Productions.

Lathe Of Heaven's album "Aurora" is scheduled for release on August 29th.
