Mansur Brown – Rihla

Virtuoso wraps up a diaristic song cycle…

Mansur Brown is deeply linked to the guitar. A highly skilled musician, his virtuoso style traverses various genres, unified by a jazz-influenced desire for freedom. However, his new album ‘Rihla’ might surprise guitar enthusiasts – despite his proficiency on the instrument, it features a wider, more electronic focus, with the album's diversity serving as a key strength.

‘Rihla’ is characterized by a diaristic quality, flourishing through authentic creativity. It navigates between the primal power perfected by Deftones on ‘White Pony’ and sparkling moments of flamenco-inspired beauty, allowing Mansur Brown to fully express his genuine self.

‘Fasiha’ presents a synth-infused daydream, serving as a vivid example of audio artistry illuminated by London’s glow. ‘Love Is Mine’ centers around Mansur’s guitar skills while also incorporating heavy drums and softly spoken vocals reminiscent of Elizabeth Fraser from Cocteau Twins.

‘Dreaming’ blends club vibes with soothing elements, whereas ‘Ghost’ introduces a more foreboding atmosphere, evoking a palpable sense of loss; ‘Alone’ features distorted dream pop, while the energetic breaks in ‘Faded’ hint at the fluid DNB of artists like LJT Buken, or even the influence of footwork.

A notable aspect of ‘Rihla’ is Mansur Brown's ability to convey a wealth of emotion in such short tracks. Most songs don’t exceed the three-minute mark, and this understated minimalism adds a subtle intensity to the album. When he does unleash his full expression, it resonates perfectly – ‘Change’ is an expansive, multi-layered piece that culminates in a wild, avant-garde rock style akin to King Crimson.

Concluding with the title track, ‘Rihla’ defies expectations and champions autonomy. A profound exploration of self, it reinforces Mansur Brown’s status as a distinctive presence in British music.
