Chappell Roan has released a new single titled ‘The Subway’—a powerful pop track showcasing the artist at her most exposed, mourning after a significant breakup. Co-produced and co-written with Daniel Nigro, this song follows March's ‘The Giver,’ a country-influenced piece that marked Chappell's return to music since her hit standalone single, ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ released in 2024. ‘The Subway’ is a sweeping power ballad embodying the essence of a heartbreak anthem, where Chappell expresses the frustration and sorrow of being unable to move on from the memories of an ex. “The cliché about ‘the girl that got away’ only brushes the surface for me with this song,” she explained. “I penned it while wandering through New York with a broken heart, constantly imagining our moments on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park, and yes… the subway.” The release of ‘The Subway’ is also complemented by a visually striking video filmed in New York, where Chappell becomes, quite literally, ensnared in her memories before ultimately deciding to cut her signature hair. Take a look at the new single (and revisit our 2023 interview with this rising star) below.
