For those who know Schitt’s Creek, the show’s stripped-down cover of Tina Turner’s song, along with Patrick’s declaration of love for David, created a beautifully poignant moment—an sentiment that Canadian artist Billianne clearly resonates with. What she may not have anticipated, however, was that her heartfelt rendition of ‘The Best’ in 2022 would soon garner over 70 million streams. Now, three years later, she is infusing that same gentle warmth into her debut album, which is both evocative and moving as it addresses the turmoil and transformations that accompany early life experiences. Starting with the finger-picked introduction of ‘Modes I’ and transitioning to the more upbeat indie-pop sound of ‘Baby Blue,’ alongside the harmony-rich ‘Cassiopeia,’ her form of candid storytelling shines throughout. In ‘Future Emma,’ the singer reaches new vocal heights, culminating in an uplifting climax, while the playful guitar pop of ‘Crush’ captures the thrilling excitement of new romance. With a relatable and engaging array of songs that perfectly highlight her expressive musical talent, ‘Modes of Transportation’ serves as an excellent introduction to Billianne’s artistic vision.
