"With my background in political studies and sociology, I possess a theoretical understanding of societal issues; music allows me to ground these concepts in reality." Your new EP ‘Somewhere Only We Go’ is deeply emotional and personal - ‘Operation Guitar Boy’ addresses a rebellion in Ghana, while ‘God Loves When You’re Dancing’ draws from a true story of overcoming hardship. What importance do you see in portraying such narratives in your work? What other influences outside of music shape your songwriting? My background in political studies and sociology provides me with a theoretical grasp of societal issues; music serves to connect them to real life. Consequently, these narratives aim to enlighten and stimulate critical thought, encouraging the liberation of my people from various forms of mental oppression. Regarding non-musical influences, I find inspiration in photography collections, poetry, short stories, and simply the daily activities I witness among family and friends. Can you share more about your ‘Familiar Folks’ collective - how does this group influence or shape your work as an individual artist? While some possess creative talents, Familiar Folks is fundamentally a community of friends, family, and neighbors. It operates on the idea that ‘it takes a village’: they serve as a support network, offer feedback on ideas, contribute their time and skills, and provide constructive criticism before anything is presented to the public. For a solo artist, being part of this community keeps me grounded and reminds me of my purpose - ‘for the people’. Who would be your ideal collaborator? As of this morning, I would choose Justin Vernon, Brittany Howard, Alt-J, and Fred again... Could you share the best and worst advice you've received? The worst advice: ‘Life is unfair or fair.’ The best advice: ‘Life is life.’ Lastly, if DIY were coming over for dinner, what would you cook? I’d likely prepare my macaroni jollof accompanied by the softest plantains available and a spicy green peppered gizzard sauce. And just so you're aware, there would also be some milk on hand in case things become too spicy for anyone.
