Musical legend David Byrne has unveiled another sneak peek of his upcoming album ‘Who Is The Sky?’, featuring the track ‘The Avant Garde’. Regarding this new release, David remarked: “Some individuals may interpret this as me calling out my friends, but it’s more intricate than that. Anyone familiar with me knows that I attend numerous shows that could be seen as avant-garde or experimental. Cutting-edge and unconventional work profoundly inspires me, as it frequently alters my perspectives and influences my actions (without merely borrowing those ideas, I hope). However, venturing into untested and radically innovative territory carries its risks. Sometimes, as is the case with any risk, it doesn’t always land perfectly. There's no assurance it will fulfill its intended purpose, but when it does, the emotional and intellectual rewards make it worthwhile. That's the gamble involved in creating something new and unconventional. So yes, there are instances when it may seem irrelevant, but often there are moments when something entirely original emerges, and it’s all valuable. I appreciate how the Ghost Train folks and Kid Harpoon took what could have been a rather standard song I composed (at least musically) and transformed it into something that sounds to me like a fusion of Led Zeppelin and Dirty Projectors."
This track is from his upcoming eleventh solo album - a sequel to his 2018 release ‘American Utopia’ - set to launch on September 5 through Matador Records. Produced by Grammy-winning Kid Harpoon (known for working with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus), ‘Who Is The Sky?’ will expand on the themes from ‘American Utopia’ - alongside its Broadway production and subsequent film - exploring human connections and the contemporary world through a brilliantly unconventional, avant-pop perspective. Additionally, the album features various collaborators, including St. Vincent, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, and The Smile’s Tom Skinner, with arrangements by the NYC-based chamber group Ghost Train Orchestra for its 12 tracks.
