There’s a treacherous comfort in returning to someone’s embrace, even when the outcome is known.

In “Fallin’ Back,” Solomon Fox encapsulates that allure with a smooth R&B and neo-soul collaboration with Amaria, which resonates in the ambiguous space between moving forward and surrendering.

      Fallin’ Back – Solomon Fox

The track, wholly written and produced in Fox’s bedroom studio, is grounded in a real-life cycle he found difficult to break free from.

“I had one ex in particular with whom we perpetually cycled through breaking up and being drawn back into the chaos,” he explains. “This was inspired by her and one of those countless nights.”

Having toured together earlier this year, Fox recognized Amaria as the ideal counterpart: “She could enhance almost any track, but this one felt like a perfect match.”

In contrast to the boundary-pushing, genre-blending works he has created for Duckwrth, Smino, and Thundercat, “Fallin’ Back” is more raw and personal – prioritizing emotional depth over musical flash. This marks a significant shift for Fox as he emerges from behind the scenes, opting for straightforward storytelling over experimental intricacies.

The single provides a first look at Sweettooth, Fox’s debut album produced entirely by himself, set to release in October 2025. The album narrates the peaks, valleys, and twists of one transformative relationship.

Fox briefly participated in a Q&A to discuss the cycles of love, late-night creativity, and what Sweettooth reveals about the complexities of letting go… and holding on.

      A CONVERSATION WITH SOLOMON FOX

Atwood Magazine: “Fallin’ Back” resides in that hazy area between moving on and reverting. Was there a personal experience that inspired this feeling?

Solomon Fox: Yes, for sure. I had a particular ex with whom we continuously cycled through ending things and then getting swept back into the whirlwind whenever we saw each other. So, this was inspired by her and one of those many nights.

You created and produced everything in your bedroom. How did being in that intimate environment affect the song's vibe?

Solomon Fox: I enjoy working in my home studio because it feels more personal, and I have the freedom to experiment without anyone else present. Plus, I often work at odd hours, so it’s great to quickly capture ideas as they come.

Amaria's voice blends seamlessly with yours, like two halves of the same diary entry. What made her the ideal fit for this track?

Solomon Fox: Amaria is fantastic. She could elevate almost any track, but this one specifically felt right as it allowed for another viewpoint on the same emotion. We toured together this spring, so I knew I could rely on her to access the right vibe.

What instrument on this track is your favorite to play, and what’s the story behind it?

Solomon Fox: It’s hard to choose, but for this track, I think the bass was the most enjoyable because I believe its groove sets the entire tone of the song.

What’s one unexpected or random thing you did between takes while making “Fallin’ Back?”

Solomon Fox: Haha, I was probably just chatting with my instruments as if they were people, asking them to produce nice sounds. Or possibly playing Wii Sports Resort.

If “Fallin’ Back” were the soundtrack for a late-night movie scene, what would we be watching?

Solomon Fox: Ooh, I love this question. I envision it in a rom-com, playing on the radio in a car during a scene where the ex reenters the picture, trying to convince the main character to give her a ride home. And maybe they rekindle their relationship, or maybe they don’t, but the other woman finds out, and it complicates everything.

When you listen to “Fallin’ Back” now, what moment in the song still gives you chills?

Solomon Fox: I think it’s the bridge when we shift the chords, and it momentarily transitions into another space. It feels unexpected, but when it returns to the hook, it ties everything together, making that moment feel really special to me.
