"I desire for people to experience a sense of community with me": Snow Wife discusses 'Bodyology' and the relationship between dance and music - Atwood Magazine

Rising pop sensation Snow Wife recently sat down with Atwood Magazine to talk about her vibrant ‘Bodyology’ EP, her dynamic relationship with dance and music, and the backstory of her artistic identity.

By blending the nostalgic, bold, and hypnotic essence of Britney Spears with the energetic hyper-pop style of Charli XCX, Snow Wife emerges as one of the most thrilling new voices in pop. The 23-year-old Texan singer and dancer, Emily Leann Snow, made a swift and daring entrance into the music scene, with her debut album, 2023’s QUEEN DEGENERATE, capturing the attention of fans who resonated with her candid and often provocative lyrics, supported by production that bridges the gap between the early 2000s and contemporary pop’s punchy sound.

Snow Wife recently chatted with Atwood Magazine about her latest EP, Bodyology, the interplay between her background in dance and her music, and her artistic growth.

When Snow first arrived in LA from Texas, her intention was not to pursue music. “I moved here for dance... I trained all my life, but then my body began to reject it as a career,” she explains. “I would attend classes I had taken a million times with the same people from my childhood, and I would panic. I often ended up in the bathroom throwing up or even passing out... it was wild.”

She struggled to reconnect with her muscle memory and the art form she cherished. Eventually, “nothing was really resonating in my body, and that’s when I began to write music.”

Whether her body’s aversion to dance was meant to be or not, she perceives her entry into the music world as a kind of spiritual turning point. “God or the universe swiftly revealed that this was my path... the decision chose me,” she reflects. Her rise in the industry was rapid, “Five or six months into writing songs, I was fortunate enough to find myself with a full-time career as an artist almost before I had realized it… once I understood that this was meant to be my life’s work, everything else started to make sense.”

With her debut album, QUEEN DEGENERATE, Snow Wife officially entered the pop realm, with tracks like “F*CK” and “AMERICAN HORROR SHOW” amassing millions of streams. Both songs blend hyper-pop elements with nostalgic production and vocals reminiscent of the 2000s. Through QUEEN DEGENERATE, Snow Wife captivated listeners with a delightful mix of nostalgia and unreserved confidence.

Now two years after her debut record, she shares, “I feel like QUEEN DEGENERATE holds a special place because it included all the songs I wrote when I first started creating music. It embodies my raw songwriting talent… I love it. It’s extremely confident, maybe even flamboyantly so.”

Transitioning to her latest EP, Bodyology, released earlier this summer, Snow Wife is clearly becoming more established as an artist. At the Governor's Ball Music Festival this year, she truly shone on stage. One statement she made during her performance that encapsulates the essence of the project is that it's a bridge between song and dance. She noted how her music career reignited her connection to dance, making Bodyology a celebration of that reconnection.

“Music helped me rebuild my relationship with dance... I don’t believe anything in my artistic world exists without the other... dance is a part of songwriting and vice versa,” she asserts. This sentiment rings true when listening to any track from the EP, even more so than in her debut. From the title track that evokes memories of carefree confidence at the club to songs like “Sweat” that feel like a Y2K anthem, Bodyology presents a unified and vivid artistic vision.

Experiencing it live was especially moving; it was clear that the rising pop star was genuinely enjoying performing. Snow Wife expressed how much she relished touring this summer. “Whenever I was on stage, I felt like, ‘This is truly where my body is meant to be’... I gain clarity about life while I’m on tour... I realized that doing shows and connecting with people is how my body was designed to function... I feel more certain about who I am and my purpose.”

Prior to hitting the stage, her key collaborator, producer, and close friend Slush Puppy helped refine the Snow Wife persona. Not only is he a long-time collaborator, but also a supportive friend in what can often be a daunting industry. Snow Wife praised Slush Puppy, stating, “I’m all in for him, he’s a brilliant person... genuinely kind to everyone he meets... he stays true to himself throughout his career, which is incredibly important to me.”
