Morrissey is putting The Smiths’ copyright and trademarks up for sale to the highest bidder.
The vocalist announced this on Morrissey-Solo, a site that frequently features updates from the Manchester artist and his management.
This latest development grants complete control over Morrissey’s business interests related to The Smiths as a whole.
It appears to encompass Morrissey’s full and exclusive rights to:
The name 'The Smiths', as established by Morrissey.
All Smiths artwork, as produced by Morrissey.
All Smiths merchandising rights.
All Smiths songs, both lyrically and musically.
All synchronization rights.
All Smiths recordings.
All contractual rights pertaining to Smiths publishing.
Morrissey stated: “I am exhausted from any and all ties to Marr, Rourke, and Joyce. I have had my fill of harmful associations. Throughout my life, I have earned my rightful place with these songs and images. I now wish to exist apart from those who wish me harm and chaos, and this is the only solution. The songs are my essence – they belong to no one else – yet they carry with them business dealings that constantly cultivate dread and animosity year after year. I must now prioritize my own protection, particularly my well-being.”
