Suede makes a powerful and exhilarating comeback, offering a sonic guide to contemporary life.

Described by frontman Brett Anderson as “broken music for broken people,” Suede’s tenth album is authentic, anthemic, and impressive. This 11-track work amplifies the drama, transforming the raw vigor of 2022’s ‘Autofiction’ into a dense, distorted fever dream that marries post-punk melancholy with haunting, emotional intimacy. It serves as a reflection of modern life's anxieties, delving into chaos and paranoia while remaining anchored by a sense of purpose and defiance. For Brett, music can act as a soothing remedy, meant to be experienced through the connections forged in shared experiences.
The album kicks off with the impactful ‘Disintegrate’, a pulsating, intense track that introduces themes of mortality. It manages to evoke a sense of threat while bursting with post-punk power, as Brett urges listeners to face their fears and “come down and disintegrate with me.”
Though ‘Antidepressants’ carries a darker tone, moments of joy emerge, particularly in ‘Dancing with the Europeans’, which emphasizes that in our toughest times, our connections endure. The track embodies a real sense of hope, celebrating the importance of being linked to something real in a fragmented world.
Intense and confessional, the album's title track presents lines like, “I’m on antidepressants I just lie awake / Singing a song while I’m happy,” illustrating that despite the overwhelming burden of modern-day worries, music can provide salvation, a form of escape, and an essential release. Additionally, the Bowie-inspired ‘June Rain’ features shimmering guitars and spoken-word sections from Brett, delivered in a raw, brutally honest, and deeply probing manner.
The album experience concludes with ‘Life Is Endless, Life Is A Moment’, a striking finale to a compelling, instinctual collection. 'Antidepressants' is a subversive work that is confrontational, unfiltered, and arguably one of their most electrifying releases yet.
8/10
