King Princess - Violence in Girls

King Princess, also known as Mikaela Straus, begins her third album 'Girl Violence' with an ethereal title track that reveals her perspective on love as a battleground. “I guess it’s true love,” she reflects, “‘cause it truly messes with me.” Yet, this somber tone contrasts with the album’s underlying message: that the pain is ultimately worthwhile. Captivated by heartbreak, Mikaela delivers her performances infused with the boozy alt-rock vibes reminiscent of a lovesick Britpop band. On the track ‘Jamie’, she drunkenly implores, “Jamie / A-ha / Can’t you leave me alone?” Much like other artistic romantics, she discovers her identity within the suffering; in ‘Girls’, she declares herself a martyr for women and the tumultuous love they inspire. “Girls! / Bring me to my knees,” she sings, her distinct New York accent soaring over a wintry soft-rock sound, highlighted by a crescendo of exclamations, “Ah! / Ah! / Ah! / Ah! / Ah! / Ah! / Girls!”

In its most romantic moment, ‘Slow Down And Shut Up’ sees Mikaela depict a version of love interrupted by fame, yet she remains enigmatic in her allure, easing her anxiety with bold confidence. “It’s you that I want / Forget your friends / They’re no fun / And it’s you that I want.” Overall, the album maintains a smoky dive bar alt-rock atmosphere, marked by feelings of distress, post-breakup self-pity, and efforts to mask the heartache with indifference. The track ‘Serena’ stands out as being more grounded, bursting with the signature grandeur of King Princess's pop-rock while affirming the authenticity of her love, despite its imperfections. “If I could make you feel this / Then maybe you’d believe me / Not everybody loves like this.” At its essence, ‘Girl Violence’ illustrates an exaggerated depiction of love and its consuming nature, filled with the earnestness, self-indulgence, and womanizing traits characteristic of King Princess. “You’ll hear me scratching at your post,” she assures in ‘Covers’, “and you’ll wonder if it’s me that’s haunting you.”
