There are moments in music history that will be remembered for a lifetime, and we believe Big Thief's headlining performance at last year's Green Man Festival will be one of those events. Even those from Team DIY who weren’t present that night felt something truly remarkable about the band's stirring presence, particularly highlighted by a touching performance of their latest album's lead single, ‘Incomprehensible’. The moment we first heard the captivating track at DIY HQ a few months back, we knew they had to grace our cover, which is why we are excited to feature them in our September 2025 issue.
“I think the hardest part is looking at yourself and recognizing the beauty within,” reflects frontwoman Adrianne Lenker in the cover story, discussing the song's deeply emotional roots. “Perhaps it's not difficult for everyone, but it has been for me. [‘Incomprehensible’] was written out of a longing to learn to love myself, to perceive myself as beautiful, and to escape the dizzying and exhausting maze of societal standards regarding beauty, which often sets a narrow definition based on shape, skin tone, age, or other factors. We're all aging continuously; most of life takes place outside of that fleeting youthful stage, and it saddens me that many individuals spend the beautiful years of their lives feeling as though they should not be growing older or showing age.”
In our September issue, we're kicking off after a busy summer full of festivals (including All Points East, Reading & Leeds, Mad Cool, Nos Alive, and more!), gearing up for a major month in music. This edition features King Princess, who opens up about her new album 'Girl Violence'; we have an insightful conversation with Biffy Clyro; and explore Joy Crookes' forward-thinking second chapter. Additionally, we take a brief trip to Amsterdam with Sprints, reconnect with Glasgow dance-punks VLURE, and go back to basics with Jehnny Beth to discuss Oasis, mosh pits, and her new release ‘You Heartbreaker, You’.
In this month’s Neu section—your go-to source for all things new music—we introduce the lively Texan trio Die Spitz (the latest signees to Jack White's label), explore the ethereal sounds of Night Tapes, and uncover why Silver Gore is the band everyone is buzzing about. We also offer a preview of our In Deep feature with jazz-pop sensation Laufey and share our thoughts on new albums from Hayley Williams, JADE, Blood Orange, Olivia Dean, and many more.
