Australian punk band These New South Whales have announced the details of their upcoming album ‘GODSPEED’, which will be released independently on November 28th. Along with this announcement, they have unveiled the album's title track, showcasing a vibrant blend of new wave elements, melodic hardcore influences, and Britpop flair that encapsulates the album’s essence.
This record marks a departure for the quartet—Jamie Timony, Todd Andrews, Will Shepherd, and Frank Sweet—as they expand their sound beyond the hardcore fusion established in their critically praised 2022 self-titled album. With Ben Greenberg (known for his work with Depeche Mode, Show Me The Body, and Drab Majesty) at the helm as producer, the recording sessions pushed the band into new sonic territories. “The GODSPEED sessions were incredibly enjoyable,” Greenberg reflects. “The band approached the project with a strong sense of purpose and dedication, striving to push their limits at every turn. That intensity is evident in the recordings, and I believe you can truly hear it in each track. It was a remarkable experience.”
At its heart, ‘GODSPEED’ encompasses both personal and political themes. “GODSPEED is about returning to oneself, living authentically, reclaiming and celebrating personal autonomy, and trusting one’s own instincts,” explains Jamie Timony. “It touches on concepts of freedom, self-sufficiency, and the rejection of groupthink and false authority. Now more than ever, it is crucial to distinguish truth from falsehood, standing up to power regardless of its nature—doing so with love rather than hatred, which can be quite challenging! Godspeed!”
Regarding the title track, Timony shares: “On a personal level, the lyrics to ‘GODSPEED’ stem from my own feeling of joy upon leaving Alcoholics Anonymous after nine years. … What if people were simply told the truth? That they aren’t broken, aren’t diseased, and aren’t doomed unless they become eternal messengers of the 12 steps?”
The album aims to encapsulate that sense of personal freedom, autonomy, and rebellion while merging the band's political commentary with moments of uplifting joy.
