Cardi B – Am I The Problem?

It's been a long time in the making. Since Cardi B's groundbreaking debut album, 'Invasion of Privacy,' was released in 2018, she has become one of the most analyzed celebrities in the world, attracting various headlines along the way. During the time leading up to her sophomore album, 'Am I The Drama?', she has embraced motherhood and gone through a divorce, making appearances both on stage and in court. Focusing back on her music, 'Am I The Drama?' seeks to capture the tumult of her life and largely succeeds.

A major release for a major talent, 'Am I The Drama?' encompasses 23 tracks, comprising over an hour of music. It closes with her iconic collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, 'WAP,' and although the album initially appears to struggle to find its direction, a strong mid-section propels Cardi B to new heights in her career.

Starting with the foreboding news-flash of 'Dead,' the album transitions into uneven production and skillful flows; nonetheless, tracks like 'Hello' and 'Imaginary Playerz' have difficulty establishing themselves amidst the polished sound. The lively track 'Pick It Up,' featuring Selena Gomez, stands out immediately, with their brilliant vocals emphasizing feminine vivacity.

In 'Bodega Baddie,' Cardi excels in her element, presenting one of her most assertive solo performances—a rhythmic fusion of snare drum and trumpet that showcases an icon reclaiming her identity.

Despite her bold self-assurance, 'Am I The Drama?' truly shines with a range of outstanding features. Kehlani captivates on 'Safe,' while 'Shower Tears' introduces an R&B glow to Cardi's repertoire, thanks to the incredible Summer Walker.

While the headline artists take the spotlight, it's often the less expected choices that leave a significant impression; for instance, a remarkable Cash Cobain on 'Better Than You' powerfully brings Cardi back to her rap roots.

An outpouring of feelings, not everything on 'Am I The Drama?' aligns perfectly with her larger vision. 'Trophies' carries a dark tone but mostly falters, whereas the comedic 'ErrTime' feels underwhelming compared to some of the standout tracks. Janet Jackson's appearance is one of the year's most astounding surprises, yet 'Principal' doesn't quite meet those lofty expectations.

Ending with 'Killin You Hoes' and 'Up,' this album feels like a release, a long-awaited narrative that does not shy away from reality. Moving Cardi B into her next phase, 'Am I The Drama?' boldly addresses explicit themes and welcomes discomfort. It is the work of a singular icon—only Cardi B could deliver such a record.
