Following the underwhelming 'Madra' from last year, NewDad has made a notable comeback with a stronger and more impactful album, although it still struggles with some consistency issues. 'Altar' showcases the Galway trio experimenting with various ideas, and when they hit the mark, they stick impressively: 'Roobosh' stands out in particular, displaying more aggression than we've previously seen from the band, complemented by a catchy chorus. The distinctly indie track 'Pretty' also shines, featuring lush harmonies and vibrant guitar riffs that create a delightfully whimsical feel. Lyrically, the album maintains a consistent theme, delving into feelings of homesickness and uncertainty regarding one's place, culminating in the emotionally charged closer 'Something's Broken,' which delivers a powerful release. However, the record is marred by the lackluster 'Sinking Kind Of Feeling' and the opener 'Other Side,' whose slow tempo feels misaligned with the overall vibe of the album. Nevertheless, it marks a significant improvement, with several tracks likely to be regarded as some of the band’s finest work.
