Olivia Dean - The Craft of Love

Olivia Dean’s 2023 debut, 'Messy,' was highly anticipated, and her follow-up now garners even more attention due to a series of notable performances, including a lunchtime set on the Pyramid Stage at last summer's Glastonbury, along with the heartfelt track ‘It Isn’t Perfect But It Might Be,’ which features in this year's Bridget Jones film. There’s an underlying warmth in the London artist's second album, recorded in a converted house-studio in East London. The opening tracks, 'Nice To Each Other' and 'Lady Lady,' adopt a lighter, more vibrant tone that revisits the carefree essence of 'Messy,' even though much of Olivia's music tends to explore more introspective and tender themes. 'So Easy To Fall In Love' follows suit with its upbeat vibe, portraying the early moments of infatuation backed by tinkling keys and lively drums. The first lines of 'Close Up' (“Chasing rabbits don’t usually end with happily ever after”) set a tone of discomfort, accentuated by the descending notes of a piano, transitioning into a sweeping chorus. The concluding track, 'Loud,' features soaring vocals at the forefront, enhanced by gentle guitar plucking and cinematic strings. 'Loud' deserves recognition for its emotional richness and clarity, reminding listeners of her talent for articulating the complexities of human relationships, with her voice conveying genuine warmth. Meanwhile, 'I’ve Seen It' wraps things up with anthemic vigor, delivering a powerful final affirmation of self-worth. 'The Art Of Loving' encompasses these themes, addressing the need for independence in 'Man I Need' and the challenge of letting go in 'Let Alone The One You Love,' as Olivia conveys these lessons thoughtfully, steering clear of any preachiness.
