A confident, expansive solo success...
Being part of one of the greatest girl groups in British music history has its highs and lows. One downside is that when members of Little Mix launch solo careers, they are often compared to one another. However, from its title onward, Perrie’s debut album is a reflection of her – showcasing her passions, influences, and life experiences. This 16-track pop memoir feels like a large-scale biographical film, conveying a personal message that is distinctly hers.
As a naturally talented singer, the songs on ‘Perrie’ highlight her remarkable vocal abilities. The track ‘Miss You,’ co-written by MNEK, could easily be mistaken for a lost Mariah Carey song – which is high praise, believe us – and R&B remains a key element throughout the album. ‘Cute Aggression’ offers a vibrant 80s flair, while the pacing slows for the smoldering vocal showcase ‘Same Place Different View.’
‘Perrie’ is an eclectic solo debut that maintains several unifying themes. The lyrics prominently focus on matters of love, while exploring various shades of folk-pop. The opening track, ‘Forget About Us,’ openly expresses heartfelt emotions, while ‘Bonnie And Clyde’ combines gentle acoustic strumming with Perrie’s narrative of love and heartbreak.
However, not every element of ‘Perrie’ resonates with the same force. While ‘Absofuckinglutely’ boasts one of the year's best titles, the song itself lacks a certain clarity, and there may be a few ballads that could appeal more to different tastes.
Yet, perhaps that critique is a bit unfair. ‘Perrie’ was crafted for its creator, expressing emotions that feel genuinely authentic. The album features several standout pop moments, including the stunning ‘You Go Your Way’ and the fiery ‘Cute Aggression.’ Despite a few missteps, it stands as a triumphant debut, with Perrie exploring various pathways while shaping her solo identity in real-time.
