Starry-eyed, jubilant Scandi-pop...
It’s hard not to see Zara Larsson’s fifth album as a shift in direction.
Released just a year after ‘Venus’, which found the Swedish artist navigating between creating a groundbreaking pop album and maintaining commercial success, ‘Midnight Sun’ feels like a return to her roots. While its predecessor grappled with this duality, this album presents no major concept or lofty ambition, just an abundance of infectious scandipop.
At just under 32 minutes, it is Larsson’s shortest album to date, reflecting an artist who is embracing her instincts and is completely uninhibited. The lead single ‘Pretty Ugly’ exemplifies this perfectly: its spirited gang-vocal hook is sure to linger in listeners’ minds throughout 2025. The track radiates a sense of carefree joy, characterized by a frenzied rush of house piano riffs and exuberant production. Even better is ‘Midnight Sun’, where sparkling hooks and club beats merge in the chorus to create something that is both exuberantly euphoric and mesmerizing.

Reconnecting with longtime collaborator MNEK — who has production credits on all ten tracks — has evidently revitalized Larsson, and her confidence shines through. ‘Crush’ and ‘Eurosummer’ brilliantly merge modern pop influences and widespread appeal with sharp, insightful writing, while the lush, hallucinogenic waves of synthesizers in ‘Saturn’s Return’ envelop the listener in opulence.
In the end, ‘Midnight Sun’ showcases Zara Larsson’s keen focus on her strengths: starry-eyed, jubilant Scandi-pop designed to light up dance floors just as easily as it energizes festival sing-alongs.
8/10
