Idlewild – Idlewild

A remarkable and revitalized comeback from the Scottish band...

Idlewild's second chapter has been executed with exceptional elegance. The cherished Scottish group returned to the scene with 2015’s ‘Everything Ever Written’, complemented by deeply moving and satisfying live performances. Their 2019 release, ‘Interview Music’, further enriched their rock-infused lyrical style, yet there was a sense – at least for this writer – that the band’s recent work was overlooked. Their first album in six years, ‘Idlewild’, serves as a moment of (re)introduction – it's a daring, streamlined powerhouse, filled with concepts, lyrics, and creativity. One of the most significant albums of their career, it also stands out as one of the most straightforwardly enjoyable rock records Idlewild has produced, offering an exhilarating experience from start to finish.

Developed alongside trusted musical collaborator Rod Jones, this truly feels like a collective effort. Every element fits together cohesively, with each member contributing to the overall sound. The opening track ‘Stay Out Of Place’ is a thrilling three-minute piece, enhanced by a unique Celtic vibe that may reflect the expansive skies of singer Roddy Woomble’s Hebridean roots. A declaration to “prove yourself,” the song conveys a sense of challenge, akin to throwing down the gauntlet.

‘Like I Had Before’ is infused with catchy melodies, featuring sharp post-punk guitars intertwined with a solid bassline. However, it’s not all intense rock moments; the deeply emotive ‘It’s Not The First Time’ showcases Idlewild’s ability to tug at heartstrings, while ‘The Mirror Still’ offers a spacious, cinematic feel.

Ultimately, Idlewild remains a rock band at heart, and the vigorous tracks here rank among their finest. ‘Make It Happen’ is outstanding, a Fugazi-like riff that joyously explodes in your mind; ‘Permanent Colours’ is an anthemic quest for life's purpose, and ‘Writers Of The Present Time’ perfectly fuses poetry with sonic chaos.

In an article written for Clash – set to go live this week – Roddy Woomble reflects on the Smiths’ knack for making every song on an album feel like a single and reveals that Idlewild adopted this approach for their new LP. It’s a fitting analogy – none of the songs exceed four minutes (more commonly a radio-friendly three), and any of these tracks could easily be released on seven-inch vinyl. This is enjoyable, precise rock music, minimalist at times yet always embracing complexity when needed. All of this leads to one conclusion: ‘Idlewild’ is undoubtedly the strongest album of their second chapter, a release that in a fair world would receive accolades and recognition at every turn.
