Boo Boos is a fresh project showcasing two well-known figures. Mark Everett – E – has guided Eels for many years, creating a unique body of inspired indie rock songwriting along the way. Kate Mattison is an extraordinary talent whose work with the Brooklyn band 79.5 received significant critical praise.
Together, they have crafted a distinctive sound that highlights familiar elements from their past while introducing new influences.
Their first album, ‘Young Love’, has been released and features a warm, witty song cycle presented with genuine flair. Lead singles like ‘That’s Not A Thing’, ‘Total Thunder’, and the playful ‘The Toughest Bitch I Know’ reflect a 70s soft rock vibe, enhanced by a bicoastal rhythm.
The shining track ‘C’mon Baby’ serves as a classic duet, offering a glamorous nod to the fantastic collaborations of the 70s.
With that in mind, Clash has asked E and Kate Mattison to share some of their all-time favorite duets…

E’s selections…
Sonny & Cher – ‘All I Ever Need Is You’
I owned the 45 of this song as a child in Virginia. It’s a lovely, sweet tune, and the chemistry between Sonny & Cher is delightful. Though my favorite rendition is by Ray Charles, which isn’t technically a duet, I’m going with the best duet version here.
Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway – ‘Where Is The Love’
Who doesn’t love this one? It’s such an unusual and original piece, effortlessly delivered by these two exceptional artists.
Big Dee Irwin & Little Eva – ‘Swinging On A Star’
This is a super-fun take on the old Bing Crosby classic, featuring some great sassy lines from Little Eva of ‘The Loco-Motion’ fame.
John C. Reilly & Angela Correa – ‘Let’s Duet’
This spot-on parody of duets is perfect because it’s also a fantastic song, from the brilliant Walk Hard.
Honorable Mention: John Lennon & Yoko Ono – ‘John & Yoko’
This track features 22 minutes and forty-four seconds of John & Yoko saying and yelling each other's names in various rhythms. It occupies an entire side of the album, and you’ve got to admire their boldness. We're considering a similar approach for the second Boo Boos album.

Kate’s selections…
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – ‘You’re All I Need To Get By’
The perfect pair. The ultimate classic.
John Prine and Iris Dement – ‘In Spite of Ourselves’
It’s playful, light, and a bit cheeky.
Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge – ‘Help Me Make It Through The Night’ (on The Old Grey Whistle Test)
This one is overflowing with intimacy.
Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz – ‘I’ll Be There’ (MTV Unplugged)
One of my favorite live R&B performances from the 90s. Mariah bringing her backup singer into the spotlight is incredibly cool, and his voice is simply stunning.
Honorable Mention: Patti Labelle and Michael McDonald – ‘On My Own’
A beloved pairing from this era of heartfelt duets.
