Lorde, Hayley Williams, Björk, Muna, and others participate in No Music For Genocide boycott.

Thousands of artists and labels have already requested that distributors geo-block their music from streaming services in Israel.

No Music For Genocide is a new cultural boycott initiative urging artists and rights-holders to withdraw their music from streaming platforms in Israel in reaction to the genocide in Gaza; the ethnic cleansing in the Occupied West Bank; apartheid within Israel; and the political suppression of pro-Palestinian efforts globally.

Since its launch just two weeks ago, the boycott has experienced rapid growth. It now includes over 1,000 artists and labels, with the list expanding daily as more prominent label artists from UMG, Sony, and Warner join in. Recent additions include Lorde, Hayley Williams, Björk, MUNA, Idles, Paloma Faith, Sir Chloe, Marc Rebillet, Obongjayar, the label Hyperdub, and Caribou. The list is regularly updated on nomusicforgenocide.org.

Drawing inspiration from the successful cultural boycott against apartheid South Africa in the 1980s, NMFG adapts that model for the streaming age. Over 1,000 artists and labels from across the globe—spanning cities like Medellin, Berlin, Tunis, Seoul, New York, Beirut, Hong Kong, and Cairo—have modified their release territories or submitted geo-block requests to their distributors or labels. The initiative welcomes participation from all artists.

“While culture alone may not stop bombs, it can foster resistance against political oppression, influence public opinion toward justice, and reject the art-washing and normalization by any entity that commits crimes against humanity. This initiative is part of a global movement aimed at undermining the support Israel requires to persist in its genocide. We’re inspired by the growing efforts toward this objective, including the recent Film Workers For Palestine pledge, Spain’s prohibition of ships and planes to Israel, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Demilitarize Brooklyn Navy Yard campaign, and Moroccan dockworkers who have refused to load weapons onto vessels sent by Tel Aviv."

“Many of our colleagues share our uncertainty about how to leverage music during this time. Our primary goal with No Music For Genocide is to motivate others to reclaim their agency and channel their influence into a concrete action. We are incredibly grateful to all the artists, managers, and labels who have taken this initial step, and we’re eager to grow this together. The more of us that unite, the stronger we will become. This is merely the beginning.”
