The influential American indie rock trio Sugar is reuniting.
Earlier this week, the announcement was hinted at on social media, and it has now been confirmed that the group will return with its original members: respected songwriter Bob Mould, bassist David Barbe, and drummer Malcolm Travis.
Sugar is back with new music, a box set, and plans for their first live shows since 1995.
They will perform at New York City’s Webster Hall on May 2nd before returning to the UK for two nights at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London on May 23rd and 24th.
Formed in 1991, Bob Mould had already garnered recognition as a pivotal figure in Hüsker Dü. The band’s remarkable 1992 album ‘Copper Blue’ was released through Creative Records and quickly became an iconic indie rock record.
‘Copper Blue – The Singles Collection’ will be a limited edition 4LP box set, set for release by BMG on Record Store Day Black Friday, November 28th.
In addition, Sugar has unveiled new material with their first single in thirty years. Titled ‘House Of Dead Memories,’ the track is a fitting introduction—eschewing nostalgia and bravely confronting the past, it’s a raw dose of melody-infused indie rock crafted by three musicians who significantly shaped the genre.
The song was recorded at Tiny Telephone Oakland in June 2025 and is now available everywhere through Granary Music/BMG—check it out below, and then read Bob Mould’s reflections on the reunion.
Bob Mould reflects…
SUGAR was a meteorite. I dedicated all of 1991 to writing and performing new material at solo shows. David and Malcolm had never met before, but I believed we would collaborate well.
SUGAR was a workhorse. After weeks of rehearsals in early 1992, we spent three months recording Copper Blue and Beaster. By the summer of 1992, the musical landscape was ripe for what we had created.
SUGAR was a phenomenon. The outcomes were unpredictable. We held on tight and made the most of the thrilling journey. Sugar played a significant role in a transformative era in popular music and was an important period in my life.
