While 2023’s ‘WEEDKILLER’ may have taken a slightly restrained approach, this second full album accelerates into high gear. “Give me the full frontal,” she asserts midway through ‘Smoochies’. “Sit on the DJ’s face and feel the beat through my puss.” There’s nothing subtle about this, which is unsurprising given the album’s launch with what she describes as an “itty bitty, teeny, tiny little slutty skirt.” Its rapid-fire risqué content is abundant and unwavering, serving as a full-throttle celebration of feminine sexuality, but as the electrifying hyperpop track ‘I Want My Boyfriends To Kiss’ demonstrates, it also speaks to all marginalized voices.
This album is a high-energy, hedonistic response to rising conservatism, flipping off so-called traditional values; it provocatively invites calls for a prudish boycott, which only enhances its impact. “Can you see my ass when I bend over,” a distorted Ashnikko queries on ‘Itty Bitty’, before a thunderous “good” kicks off the pulsating bass. It illustrates ‘Smoochies’ as what it is: a joyous rejection of moderation and safety. Racing through sultry pop at breakneck pace, with occasional hints of country and Arabian influences, ‘Smoochies’ embodies a daring affirmation of self-love in multiple dimensions. This is restrained in all the right ways.
