Several reports from the United States indicate that the modern soul icon D’Angelo has passed away.
These reports are emerging from various sources, but there has yet to be an official confirmation from the singer’s family. D’Angelo, whose real name is Michael Eugene Archer, had been fighting pancreatic cancer and is believed to have died earlier this week.
Hip-hop legend DJ Premier, who has collaborated with D’Angelo in the past, expressed his condolences:
Such a tragic loss with the passing of D’Angelo. We shared so many wonderful moments. I will miss you dearly. Rest peacefully, D.
Producer The Alchemist has also paid tribute, honoring the legacy of this icon:
Man. Rest in peace, D’Angelo.
The singer's debut album ‘Brown Sugar,’ released in 1995, redefined soul and R&B for the contemporary era and played a pivotal role in the emergence of the neo-soul movement. D’Angelo continuously evolved beyond genre constraints, seeking new artistic challenges throughout his distinguished body of work.
His 2000 album ‘Voodoo’ firmly embraced the Soulquarian sound and became a landmark for modern soul music, aligning his allure as a sex symbol with songwriting of profound insight.
An enigmatic presence, D’Angelo stepped away from the limelight for ten years before making a powerful comeback with ‘Black Messiah’ in 2014.
D’Angelo was a father of three children, including a son with Angie Stone from their relationship in the 1990s. Tragically, Stone passed away in a car accident at the age of 63 earlier this year.
