Pulp - "More"

“It’s perhaps refreshing to witness some 60-year-olds energetically performing on stage and singing about the experiences of being in a later stage of life.” What initially inspired ‘More’? Were there already ideas forming in 2023 during your This Is What We Do For An Encore tour? Yes, there was a very positive energy among the group; we all got along well, and we could see that there was interest in what Pulp was creating. Jarvis, who is known for his lyrical writing and stage presence, can sometimes struggle to express his thoughts to the rest of us. He brought in a few snippets during soundchecks and asked, ‘Hey, can we try this?’; ‘Oh Candida, could you add a keyboard line here?’ Eventually, Candida and I had a conversation where we agreed that it really felt like Jarvis wanted to work on another record… One reason ‘More’ has resonated so deeply with listeners is its exploration of time and the candid portrayal of aging… It's worth noting that many people in their sixties are still engaged with new music and remain true to themselves. When I was younger, anyone over 21 seemed ancient! It’s wild. There are thousands – millions! – of 60-year-olds who don't feel that age. So it’s likely uplifting to see some 60-year-olds expressing themselves on stage and sharing what it means to navigate a later stage of life. You’re familiar with the Mercury Prize, having been nominated three times already! Indeed! It’s great that it acknowledges bands doing unique things rather than merely revisiting their past successes. We were quite disappointed back in 1994, as we thought ‘His 'N Hers’ was a sure thing to win. We were a bit upset, but it is what it is – you can't have everything. We hold no grudges! DIY has partnered with LNER – the Official Travel Partner of the 2025 Mercury Prize Newcastle – to highlight the significance of journeys, both musical and physical.
