Sam Fender - "Observing People"

Expansive in nature, more tranquil and introspective; this album takes a moment mid-journey to gaze out the window. However, it doesn't dwell on itself or indulge in self-pity. After the cautious self-reflection in ‘Chin Up’, he moves past regret with the lively ‘Rein Me In’, balancing themes of love and heartbreak in the captivating ‘Arm’s Length’. Fender demonstrates that one can reveal their deepest insecurities while still crafting anthems meant for large audiences, designed for gatherings of 50,000 and beyond. The essence of connection remains vital to the album, deeply rooted in the North East. From house gatherings to deserted neighborhoods, he captures the essence of home with heartfelt clarity. The comparisons to Springsteen will persist, but here they feel justified rather than confining: Fender has evolved into a distinctly Geordie songwriter, expansive and nostalgic without solely relying on American influences. This record also serves as a declaration of independence. Co-produced with longtime collaborators Joe and Dean, along with input from The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel, it is undeniably homegrown. The tracks are sweeping enough for stadiums yet intricate upon closer listen—combining grit and grandeur in a manner reflective of Newcastle and Fender himself. Sam Fender is not just one of the prominent figures in British rock; ‘People Watching’ illustrates his thoughtful connection to his origins and influences. As the 2025 Mercury Prize shifts its focus away from London to Newcastle for the first time, it further emphasizes his significance. He has nearly single-handedly reinvigorated the musical scene in the Toon, benefiting not just himself but an entire generation of North Eastern artists. Ultimately, that’s what the Mercury Prize honors: an album that captures a moment, communicates it truthfully, and transforms the surrounding culture. DIY has partnered with LNER - the Official Travel Partner of the 2025 Mercury Prize Newcastle - to highlight the importance of both musical and physical journeys.
